This is a full time, seasonal position from August through mid-December that may be extended into a salaried year-round position for the right candidate.
Perform a variety of tasks necessary for operating a seaweed nursery that provides seed to our network of partner kelp farmers throughout the state of Maine.
Work with Kelp Supply Director to lead, manage, and perform experiments in the kelp nursery to help us innovate our kelp growing techniques, improve efficiency in seeding for our partner farmers, and get stronger and more predictable yield.
Work with Kelp Supply Director to research and develop methods for growing new species of seaweed seed
Conduct routine nursery tasks including water changes, tending to seaweed spools, taking growth measurements under a microscope, and maintaining a detailed scientific logbook
Assist in a variety of nursery expansion projects often requiring use of power equipment and an eye towards safety
Contribute critical thinking and innovation necessary for improving and expanding the operations of an exciting, rapidly growing business with a strong social and economic mission
Bachelor’s degree or higher
Experience working in a scientific/laboratory setting, including general understanding of sterile technique, principles of biology, and detailed note-keeping
Experience operating large vehicles. Possession of a Commercial Driver’s License is not required but is highly desirable.
Boating experience is highly desirable
Mechanical aptitude/experience is preferred
Flexibility in schedule, with ability to work early mornings, evenings, and on weekends when necessary
Ability to lift and move objects of up to 50lbs
Strong interpersonal skills
A good attitude, and a willingness to learn during an exciting period of growth for Atlantic Sea Farms
