Atlantic Sea Farms (Ocean Approved, Inc.) is a brand with a robust social and environmental mission and ambitious growth goals. The Fermentation Lead will be responsible for overseeing, innovating, and creating efficiency and continuous quality for Atlantic Sea Farms’ fermentation processes and fermentation staff. This position will work closely with the Kelp Production Manager, the Director of Quality and Food Innovation, and the CEO. This position will require strong attention to detail and quality, a scientific focus, excellent people management skills, and an innovative mindset. This is a full-time, year-round, salaried position.

The Fermentation Lead’s work will contribute directly to creating more opportunities for Maine’s coastal communities by driving demand for Maine-grown kelp. 

Essential Duties:

  • Oversee the production, fermentation, and packaging of the fermented products
  • Manage and organize fermentation staff
  • Work with Sales and Management teams to determine and set fermentation schedule 
  • Set, manage, and implement sanitation and preventative maintenance processes and procedures for fermentation room and its equipment 
  • Support kelp production as required 
  • Work closely with Food Innovation and Quality Director to remain in compliance with SQF standards, record keeping, and processes 
  • Manage documentation for fermentation process, food safety, and quality 
  • Support order packing and shipping
  • Train fermentation staff 
  • Maintain inventory tracking and manage procurement for all ingredients, packaging, and processing supplies in coordination with the Atlantic Sea Farms’ Controller
  • Other tasks as assigned 


  • Strong background in food safety and quality - Experience with GFSI third-party audits is considered a tremendous asset
  • 5+ years in food manufacturing preferred
  • 2+ years of management experience 
  • Background in fermented and/or functional foods strongly preferred 
  • Ability to identify problems or risks and solve for them quickly 
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work as a valued team member 
  • Ability to bring optimism, enthusiasm, and a strong spirit for collaboration and innovation every day 
  • Strong attention to detail and quality 
  • Commitment to honesty, fun, hard work, and meaningfully contributing to an optimistic, cohesive team atmosphere
